About Us

The Choirs

We are based in St. Peter’s Church, Swinton M27 0WA, which is a Church of England church in the Anglo Catholic tradition. For several years our choir was small in number but was reduced even further by the Covid outbreak when choral singing was not recommended.

Since then, the appointment of Neil G Bennett as our Organist and Choirmaster has seen a considerable improvement in both choir numbers and musical repertoire. Originally intended to support church services, the new objective is to have three choirs – the first, Church Choir, to sing the Sunday Services, another, Consort Of Voices, to sing a monthly Festal Choral Evensong on the last Sunday of each month with a choir rehearsal from 2pm – and a third, Chamber Choir, to sing a series of concerts throughout the year with organ and orchestra – this will begin in the late Spring with a concert to include Vivaldi:Gloria and Rutter:Feel The Spirit. Singers who are unable to commit to Sundays are welcome to join the other choirs.

All vocal parts and music are emailed across to choir members in advance of rehearsals.

The choirs are called:

  • The St Peter’s Church Choir – Weekly Mass and occasional services
  • The St Peter’s Chamber Choir – Monthly Festal Choral Evensong
  • The St Peter’s Consort of Voices – A series of concerts throughout the year

St. Peter’s Church has a newly installed, large 3 manual, state of the art, Allen Computer Organ – capable of being an English Willis, French Cavaille-Coll, German Schlicker or Arp Schnitger, or an American Aeolian-Skinner Cathedral Organ in less than 10 seconds using the touch screen. It also has 8 highly variable “Genisys” stops capable of a great many other sounds. This new organ will be used for organ recitals and a series of concerts both instrumental and choral are planned for the future. Again, for these larger events, an augmented choir is envisaged to enable us to perform larger pieces requiring double choir or a greater number of voices.

Rehearsals

  1. For Sunday services we rehearse at 9:30 for the 10:30 mass.
  2. For Choral evensong, we rehearse on the Sunday from 2pm for a 4pm service.
  3. For Concerts we rehearse on the day – TBC.
